Journal entries from day #8:
We woke up to a cloudless day - I was beginning to think we weren't going to get any of those during whole trip. We went for a walk and decided to hike the mountain by our camp: Gimsøya. It wasn't a difficult hike by any means, but my legs were shot from the hike before. The views from the top were pretty great. After making it back down, we saw that our campfire friends left us a note written in the dirt on our car :)
We spent the last few hours driving back toward the airport, away from Lofoten, to get to the polar zoo before tomorrow. It was that, or a long drive to go whale watching in the arctic cold. We're in Narvik, where the mountains are covered in snow and the lakes are still frozen. I didn't pack to sleep in freezing conditions, So I will probably be sleeping in the car. We're actually very close to Sweden - I'm not sure how that would work with a rental, but that would be an unexpectedly cool thing to try out. Our last day up north is tomorrow, then we'll be heading to Stavanger and the Lysefjord. I'll miss the midnight sun - just not the sunburns at 11 PM.
Quick change of plans! On our quest, and during our success in finding WiFi, we realized our car rental is actually due back tomorrow morning. The clerk was actually wrong and our flights our tomorrow. So, we will not get to the polar zoo; I guess we will be making a visit to the wolf sanctuary in Massachusetts, some day. We're on our way back, driving through the night back the way we came and then packing up our bags. At least we won't be freezing in our tent. A big Thank You to the girl in the Narvik Statoil who kept us company and gave us free candy and directions! It really is nice how friendly people are when you're traveling.
Here was our route in Lofoten, for the entirety of it.
